Our corporate office is at 513 3rd Avenue in Alpha. That is where the phone rings, where the trucks load in the morning, and where our estimates get written. Warren Thompson founded the company in 1973, a year after his Honorable Discharge from the United States Marine Corps.

His son Brian joined in 1999 after his own Honorable Discharge and became a full partner in 2008. Alpha is a borough of about 2,300 people and a little over a thousand homes. We have worked on a good share of them.

A Roofer Who Actually Works in Alpha

Alpha is unusual. The borough is completely surrounded by Pohatcong Township, which means every road out of town runs through one municipality. It was incorporated in 1911 out of Pohatcong land, and it took its name from the Alpha Cement Works. Before that it went by Vulcanite, after the Vulcanite Portland Cement Company. New Brunswick Avenue runs across what used to be that company’s property. That history shows up on the roofs. Roughly a third of the housing here was built before 1940, much of it in the tight grid laid out around the cement operations. A lot of those homes are attached or twin construction, which changes how a tear-off gets staged and how the flashing at the party wall has to be handled. Newer stock from the fifties through the seventies sits on wider lots with simpler gable runs. We price both every week. The 08865 ZIP is shared with Phillipsburg, and mail carriers, insurance adjusters and out-of-town contractors get the two mixed up constantly. We do not. If you are on 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th Avenue, on East Boulevard, or anywhere off Lee Avenue, we know the block.

You Do Not Need a Permit to Replace Your Roof in Alpha

New Jersey classifies the repair or replacement of existing roof covering on a detached one- or two-family home as ordinary maintenance. No construction permit, no inspection, no fee. That is written into the Uniform Construction Code at N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7. It applies statewide, and it applies here.Structural work is different. If the deck is rotted and sheathing has to come off, or if the job involves a three-family or a commercial building, the Alpha Building Department gets involved. Their construction office is at Borough Hall and runs by appointment. We handle that filing when a job calls for it, and we tell you up front which category your roof falls into.Any contractor working on your home in New Jersey has to be registered with the Division of Consumer Affairs and carry at least $500,000 in general liability coverage. The registration number belongs on the estimate, the contract and the truck. Ask for it. Ask everyone for it.

What Warren County Weather Does to a Roof

Warren County carries a 35 psf ground snow load under the state’s design tables. Belvidere, the county’s long-running weather station, averages about 23 inches of snow a year, and January runs a mean around 28 degrees. That combination is hard on eaves. Snow sits, melts off warm attic air, and refreezes at the overhang. Here is something most homeowners never hear. New Jersey only requires ice barrier membrane at the eaves in one county, and it is Sussex, not Warren. Every DCA bulletin on the subject says so. So when we run ice and water shield along the eaves and valleys on an Alpha roof, that is not us meeting a minimum. That is a deliberate call, and we will explain where we put it and why.Wind is handled the same careful way. New Jersey pulled the county wind-speed table out of the code and now requires a site-specific lookup, so nobody gets to quote you a blanket number for Warren County. Fastening pattern gets set by the manufacturer’s spec for the actual exposure of your house. The remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021 put Warren County on the federal disaster declaration for individual assistance. Storm damage here is not theoretical, and neither is the insurance paperwork that follows it.

The Roof Evaluation Comes First

We will tell you when a roof has years left. That is the whole point of an honest evaluation. A twenty-year-old three-tab with sound decking and one bad valley is a repair, not a replacement, and we will say so before we quote anything else. Warren manages the replacement side of the company and Brian manages repairs, so there is no incentive here to push a job in either direction.

Every quote is written and itemized. Materials, layers coming off, deck condition allowance, ventilation, and cleanup are all on the page before you sign.

Also Serving the Towns Around Alpha

Alpha borders exactly one municipality, so our service radius reaches well past the borough line in every direction. We regularly work in Pohatcong Township, Phillipsburg, Lopatcong, Greenwich Township and Stewartsville, Bloomsbury, and across the river in Easton, Forks and Bethlehem.

Our second office is in Hackettstown. The full list is on our service areas page.

FAQ’s About Our Roofing Services in Alpha

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Alpha, NJ?

Not for a detached one- or two-family home. New Jersey treats roof covering replacement on those buildings as ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, so no construction permit is required. Three-family homes, larger multifamily and commercial buildings do require a permit through the Alpha Building Department, and structural repairs to the roof deck can trigger one as well.

Is ice and water shield required by code in Alpha?

No. New Jersey requires ice barrier underlayment only where the average January temperature is 25 degrees or below, and the state has identified that as Sussex County alone. Warren County is not included. We install it at the eaves and valleys anyway on most Alpha roofs, because 23 inches of annual snow and a 35 psf snow load make ice damming a real risk here.

How much does a new roof cost in Alpha?

It depends on square footage, pitch, the number of layers coming off, deck condition, and the shingle line you pick. A single-story ranch off Lee Avenue and a two-and-a-half story twin in the old grid are not the same job. We measure the roof, look at the attic and the decking, and put a written number in front of you. We do not quote roofs over the phone.

Can you work on attached and twin homes?

Yes. A good portion of Alpha’s older housing is attached or twin construction. Those jobs need the party wall flashing detailed correctly and the tear-off staged so debris does not end up on your neighbor’s side. We have done this street by street in this borough for years.

Do you handle storm damage insurance claims?

We inspect the roof, document what we find, and give you a written report your adjuster can work from. Warren County was included in the federal disaster declaration after the remnants of Hurricane Ida in 2021, so we have been through this process with a lot of local homeowners.
